Monroe asks a crew two questions before the first box comes off: which side of the downtown truck ordinance the address is on, and which end of the new bypass reaches it. Two National Register districts of antebellum and Victorian houses downtown; D.R. Horton phases, gravel drives toward Good Hope, and a 55-plus community on the old mill site at the edges. Each gets its own plan, on paper, before move day.
Monroe, the Walton County seat, rents 57.7% of its occupied homes.
Monroe is the seat of Walton County, roughly 45 miles east of downtown Atlanta and 25 miles west of Athens on US-78, with Broad Street (GA-11) running north–south through the historic core and GA-138 heading southwest toward Conyers. The city grew from 14,928 residents in 2020 to an estimated 16,800 in 2026, mostly in new subdivisions, and uses two ZIP codes: 30655 for the core and south side, 30656 for the north. Downtown carries a no-through-truck ordinance, and a 4.7-mile southern bypass opened in late 2025. LIOO Moving works Monroe by the hour from $160, on minimums the calendar sets — 2.5 hours standard, 3 hours on weekends, same-day bookings, and moves 25 or more miles from downtown — with the price on paper before the date is set. The Working List
Period Doors, Poured Slabs, and Gravel
Five address types fill the Monroe board, and the plan changes at every one of them:
North & South Broad Street district homes
Both districts went on the National Register in 1983 — 56 contributing buildings along North Broad and Walton Street, a matching run south of the courthouse — and the houses are what a cotton county seat built: two-story antebellum and Victorian frame homes, single-width doors, landing-turn staircases, old hardwoods over the street. Broad Street is closed to through trucks, so the truck arrives as a local delivery with the work order on the dash and stages at the curb or side drive. Armoires and the piano come out through the widest opening, often the rear, with the newel post and casings padded first — and Monroe's antiques trade means plenty of single-piece jobs, priced by the piece and the stairs. Ask for the antique-and-piano crew when you book. Pianos, gun safes and anything over 300 pounds carry a $100 specialty-item fee, quoted before you book.
The Mills district & MainStreet Walton Mill
Between South Broad, South Madison Avenue, and the rail line, the Monroe and Walton Mills Historic District holds the 1895 and 1900 cotton mills and 236 contributing structures — mostly mill-village houses: short carries, narrow lots, doorways sized for 1900. On the mill site, MainStreet Walton Mill at 698 South Broad Street is a 74-unit, 55-and-older community, so moves there — and into the Cottages of Monroe — are downsizes: a sorted household, a day paced by the senior moving line, and short-term storage for what the new floor plan can't take.
New subdivisions off Tate Street, GA-11 & GA-138
Walton County's growth goes up in phases: Brookland Commons on Tate Street is D.R. Horton single-family homes and townhomes of 1,700–1,950 square feet, with similar builds along GA-11 and GA-138. New-construction move-ins fail two ways — the GPS pin lands on the model home, and the closing slips after the truck is booked — so dispatch takes the builder, lot number, and walk-through date and lets the reservation move with the closing. Townhome phases stack the living space above the garage, which makes every sofa a stair carry — and on every first move-in, floor runners roll out and the new casings get padded before anything crosses the sill.
Apartments on Ridge Road, Aycock Avenue & Plaza Drive
The rental stock is small and garden-style — Skyline Trace on Ridge Road, The Jax on Aycock Avenue, Ashton Pointe on Plaza Drive — walk-up buildings with exterior stairs, so a third-floor two-bedroom is a three-mover job by default. Pass dispatch the building and unit and the apartment crew sends the leasing office its certificate of insurance ahead of the date.
Acreage toward Between, Good Hope, Walnut Grove & Youth
Outside the bypass the addresses turn rural fast: acreage lots, 300-foot gravel drives, a culvert at the road, a turnaround sized for a pickup. Dispatch asks whether a 26-foot truck can get in and back out; if not, it holds at the road and the crew shuttles with dollies, with that carry time in the estimate, not sprung at the curb. Barns and workshops are the other half of these jobs — say so at booking. If the rental truck or container is already on the pad, a loading crew works it on the lower labor-only card, from $140/hr for two movers.

The rate covers crew, truck, dollies, pads, and straps — no separate truck line — and the minimum is set by the calendar: 2.5 hours standard, 3 hours on weekends, same-day bookings, and moves 25 or more miles from downtown, with the applicable window named right on the quote. A 25% reservation deposit goes on the books and comes back off the final invoice, and every job carries basic released valuation at $0.60 per pound per item, with full-value protection available if elected before the job. How an hourly estimate gets assembled from your inventory sits on the local moving page, mechanics included.
Actual costs vary based on inventory, stairs, elevator use, carry distance, and truck access.
Old Doors, Long Drives, One Highway
Three variables set the hours. Period-home handling: a Broad Street two-story with a landing-turn staircase and furniture that predates the doorways runs four movers for 5 to 7 hours — $1,200 to $1,680 at $240/hr — where the same bedroom count in a Brookland Commons floor plan is usually three movers for 4 to 5 hours at $200/hr, or $800 to $1,000. Driveway access: a gravel drive the truck can't turn on costs a shuttle, typically an added hour — about $200 with three movers. Distance: Atlanta is an hour each way on US-78 — two billable hours of road if the truck leaves before the Spring Street peak, three if it doesn't. The smallest jobs bill the minimum in full, and which minimum applies is printed on the quote; where a garage is still unboxed, a packing crew the day before usually costs less than the hours it removes — ask at booking.
Ordinance & Bypass
The Legal Way In
Since January 2024 the city bars through trucks over 26,000 pounds, more than eight wheels, or longer than 45 feet from Broad Street end to end, Spring Street between GA-138 and US-78, and both Madison Avenues — exempting local pickups and deliveries with written proof. And on October 31, 2025 the 4.7-mile southern bypass opened, from Unisia Drive at US-78 around to South Broad Street (GA-11) below downtown, built to pull roughly 2,000 trucks a day off the Spring-and-Broad intersection. A moving truck delivering to your house is a local delivery — the rules don't stop the job, they decide the approach. This is dispatch's sheet:
- North or South Broad, Walton Street, the Madison Avenues→
- In from US-78 or the bypass as a local delivery, work order on the dash.
- Stages at the curb or side drive; out of Spring & Broad at the peak.
- Mill district — South Broad below the courthouse, Walton Mill→
- Off the bypass at its South Broad end; never crosses the Spring Street light.
- Walton Mill's lot by arrangement; street-side in the village.
- North side — 30656, GA-11 toward Bethlehem, Monroe Pavilion, Piedmont Walton→
- US-78 to the Highway 11 junction, still waiting on its signal — an early start beats the queue.
- Driveway apron; assigned space at the complexes.
- East side — Unisia Drive, the plants, subdivisions off GA-83→
- Bypass entrance at Unisia Drive — the truck never enters downtown.
- Apron or street.
- Southwest — GA-138 toward Walnut Grove; acreage toward Good Hope and Youth→
- Bypass to GA-138 or GA-11 south; gravel drives checked at booking.
- Shoulder and a shuttle when the drive won't take a 26-foot truck.
The price doesn't move with the row — a Walton Street house and a Unisia Drive subdivision book the same card — but the row sets the start time and whether the estimate carries a shuttle line. Dispatch wants the street and nearest cross street, not just "Monroe."

The Westbound Hour
Beating the Spring Street Peak
The Atlanta side of every job runs US-78 through Loganville and Snellville to Stone Mountain — about an hour clear, closer to ninety minutes once the westbound commute builds past Loganville after 7 a.m. The clock runs on the truck's time between addresses, so a Monroe-to-Atlanta move loads early and heads west after the peak, keeping the road to about two billable hours; a crew coming out from East Point runs opposite the flow. In the city, Spring Street (old US-78 through town) carries the Piedmont Walton and Monroe Pavilion traffic on the west side, and the Highway 78-and-11 junction on the north side queues until its signal goes in — plans cleared GDOT's regional office in July 2026. Walton County schools go back the first week of August, so family closings pile into late July, and downtown event weekends can close Broad Street blocks — dispatch checks the city calendar before confirming a Broad Street date. Runs that leave the metro entirely — Savannah, Augusta, the coast — move to weight-and-distance pricing with a surveyed, binding estimate; we quote nothing beyond the Georgia line.
Three Papers
Three Documents, Filed Early
The Motor Carrier Compliance Division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety licenses household-goods movers in this state; LIOO Moving holds that license and insurance, and every Monroe job runs as a Georgia intrastate move. Three documents come up here more than elsewhere: the work order that satisfies the downtown truck ordinance, the certificate of insurance a leasing office or HOA wants before the truck enters, and the builder's walk-through sheet. Name the address type at booking and the paperwork is done before the date.
The Pairings
Out of Walton County in Every Direction
Monroe move traffic follows US-78, GA-11, and GA-138. The runs dispatch sees most:
Loganville
Ten miles west on US-78 — the most common pairing, with Loganville moving crews on the same highway.
Winder
GA-11 north through Bethlehem to the Barrow County seat — a two-courthouse run with no interstate, covered by our movers for Winder.
Covington
South through Walnut Grove into Newton County — two historic squares, one crew.
Conyers
GA-138 southwest to I-20 and Rockdale County.
Snellville
Down US-78 past Loganville to the Scenic Highway side of Gwinnett — the Snellville movers page covers that end.
Grayson
US-78 to GA-20 — trades addresses with Monroe's new phases both ways, via our Grayson moving services.

Our house is on Broad Street and the signs say no trucks — can your truck even get to the door?
Yes. The ordinance bans through trucks — over 26,000 pounds, more than eight wheels, or longer than 45 feet — using Broad, Spring, or Madison as a shortcut, and exempts local pickups and deliveries with written proof. A moving truck unloading at your address is exactly that: the crew keeps the work order on the dash, comes in from US-78 or the bypass, and stages at your curb or side drive, starting early enough to stay out of Spring and Broad at the peak.
What does a Monroe move cost?
By the hour, with the crew size setting the rate — $160/hr for a two-mover crew and truck, $200 for three, $240 for four, $280 for five, $320 for six — with truck and equipment included and the minimum tiered by date: 2.5 hours standard, 3 hours on weekends, same-day bookings, and moves 25 or more miles from downtown. A one-bedroom on Ridge Road is a two-mover job around $480–$900; a three-bedroom Brookland Commons home usually lands at $1,000–$1,800 on a three- or four-mover crew; a Broad Street two-story with period furniture runs four movers for 5 to 7 hours. The written figure comes first, then the booking. Actual costs vary based on inventory, stairs, elevator use, carry distance, and truck access.
Does a 30656 address change anything about the move?
Only the approach. 30655 covers downtown, the mill district, and the south and east sides; 30656 the north side toward Bethlehem and the Highway 11 corridor — both are Monroe, on the same rate card. Dispatch books 30656 jobs early because they come in through the 78-and-11 junction, and checks whether a neighboring postal city like Good Hope or Social Circle is the real address, which changes the drive but not the hourly card.
Third floor at Skyline Trace, no elevator — how much do the stairs add?
Less than people expect, if the crew is sized for it. Ridge Road, Aycock Avenue, and Plaza Drive are walk-up garden complexes, so a third-floor unit means two flights on every carry, and two movers spend half the clock on the landings. We quote a two-bedroom there as a three-mover job at $200/hr; the total usually comes in under the two-mover version because the hours drop faster than the rate rises. At booking we need the building, the unit, the breezeway nearest a spot the truck can hold, and whether the office wants its insurance certificate first.
We close on a new build off Tate Street next week and the date keeps sliding — can you hold a crew?
Yes. Walton County closings slip, so we book against your closing and walk-through dates and slide the crew with them — the earlier dispatch hears about a change, the more start windows stay open. Bring the builder name and lot number to the booking call, and know whether the driveway is poured yet — Tate Street phases often aren't on the map when the truck is booked.
Our driveway is gravel and about 300 feet long — will a 26-foot truck make it in?
Often yes, and we decide before the day. Dispatch asks about the surface, the culvert, low limbs, and room to turn around; if the truck can get in and back out, it goes to the house. If not, it holds on the shoulder and the crew shuttles with dollies, with that carry time a line on the written estimate rather than a surprise. Outbuildings count as inventory — mention the shop and the barn.
My mother is moving from her Walton Street house into Walton Mill — how do you handle a downsize like that?
As two jobs with one crew. The house end is a full day — a period home's furniture, most of it not going to a one-bedroom — and the Walton Mill end is short: the chosen pieces, placed where she wants them, at her pace. We split the inventory at the estimate so estate-sale or storage items load separately, and work the Walton Mill end on the office's parking arrangement, not from a truck on South Broad.
I just bought a marble-top dresser at one of the antique malls — will you run it home for me?
That's a Monroe specialty for a reason: the antiques district sells more furniture than most towns own, and single-piece runs are regular work. The antique-and-piano crew quotes one-piece jobs by the piece and the stairs at both ends; a same-day run with a regular hourly crew is also an option, with the tiered minimum applying like any booking. Either way the piece rides blanket-wrapped and strapped, and the quote is settled before the tailgate opens.
How do I know the bill won't grow once the truck is loaded?
Because the structure of the bill is fixed before the date is: LIOO Moving puts the crew count, the rate, your date's minimum window, and any shuttle or stair lines on the written estimate up front, and the 25% reservation deposit you put down comes off that same invoice. The hours can only move with the work — the rate, the minimum, and the line items can't, because you're holding them on paper.
Can you load a PODS container at a house out toward Good Hope?
Yes. LIOO Moving loads and unloads PODS®, U-Haul®, Penske®, Budget®, and similar containers throughout the area, and rural Walton County is where containers earn their keep — the pod sits on the pad while the crew works on the lower labor-only card, from $140/hr for two movers. The same access questions apply as any acreage job: the drive surface, the turnaround, and where the container actually sits relative to the door.
