Getting a Georgia Driver's License: A New Resident's Guide

- Pay the fee and get your license. You'll receive a temporary license and your permanent card by mail.
- Handle your vehicle separately. New residents must also title and register a vehicle at the county tag office within 30 days — that's a different transaction from your license.
What's usually waived
If you're transferring a valid license from another U.S. state, Georgia typically waives the written knowledge test and the road-skills test — you only need the vision screening. If your out-of-state license has expired (generally beyond a short grace period), you may have to take the tests, so switch before it lapses.
