Do you have to tip movers?

No — a tip is never mandatory, and a good moving company already pays its crews. But tipping is a long-standing courtesy in the moving industry, the same way it is for a great server or barber. There's no single “correct” number. Pick whichever of these three methods is easiest for you — they land in roughly the same place.

For most local moves the flat-per-mover method is the easiest to plan around. For long, complex, or high-dollar moves, the percentage method usually works out fairer to the crew.

When to tip on the higher end

The base ranges assume a clean, straightforward move. Bump the tip up when the crew earns it:

• Stairs and no elevator — walk-ups and buildings with a broken or reserved-only elevator mean every box is carried.
• Heavy or specialty items — a piano, gun safe, treadmill, appliances, or oversized furniture add real risk and effort.
• Long carries and tough parking — a truck parked far from the door, or tight intown streets, add trips and time.
• Extreme weather — Atlanta summer heat and humidity, or a cold, rainy, or icy day, are brutal to move in.
• Hoisting or disassembly — items lifted over balconies, or furniture taken apart and rebuilt, take extra skill.

When it's okay to tip less — or not at all

Tipping rewards service, so it's fine to scale back for a genuinely poor job — showing up late without notice, careless handling, damage, or rudeness.
