A Druid Hills move is decided by distance inside the property before the miles between addresses matter: how far a 26-foot truck stops from a front door on a lot laid out in the Olmsted plan, how many turns the original staircase makes on the way to the second floor, and whether a Clifton Road building has its freight elevator held for the crew. Dispatch writes all three into the plan before the date is held. Druid Hills has 54.3% of its housing units in detached houses.
Druid Hills is the neighborhood Frederick Law Olmsted planned in 1893 for Joel Hurt's Kirkwood Land Company and that was built from 1905 to 1936 on both sides of the Atlanta city line, all of it in DeKalb County: two of the civic association's nine districts sit inside the city, the rest in the unincorporated Druid Hills CDP, and the Emory University, CDC and Children's Healthcare campuses were annexed into Atlanta on January 1, 2018 without leaving the county. The 1,300-acre Druid Hills Historic District joined the National Register in 1979, arranged around a two-mile divided Ponce de Leon Avenue with six linked park segments between its carriageways. Addresses run 30307 and 30306 on the historic streets, 30322 on the Emory campus and hospital, and 30329 on the Clifton Road blocks north of the hospital. Emory's first-year move-in is Saturday, August 22, 2026, with returning students on Sunday, August 23. LIOO Moving bills the neighborhood by the hour, $160 for two movers and a truck, with a 2.5-hour weekday floor.

The carry comes before the inventory
Five kinds of Druid Hills address, and what each one asks of the truck
Five kinds of address share the neighborhood, and the first thing dispatch writes down for each is where a 26-foot truck can stop — the bedroom count comes after. These are the notes a crew is assigned from.

The Olmsted streets: Springdale, Oakdale, Fairview, Lullwater & The By Way
Houses built between 1905 and 1936 by architects including Neel Reid, Walter T. Downing and Henry Hornbostel sit well back on lots that follow Olmsted's curving plan, under a canopy the county and the city both protect by permit. The distance from the curb to the front door is the first number on the estimate. The truck stops where the drive or the street allows and the crew covers the rest on dollies; nothing is trimmed or tied back to bring it closer.
The Ponce frontage and the linear park
Ponce de Leon Avenue is a two-mile divided parkway here, with the six Olmsted park segments — Springdale, Virgilee, Oak Grove, Shadyside, Dellwood and Deepdene — laid between its carriageways from Briarcliff Road east toward Decatur. Houses face the park, so the truck works from the near carriageway or the side street, and a South Ponce de Leon address is quoted with its own curb. The park opens 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour brings up to 1,500 visitors to these streets in April.
University Park, Emory Highlands & Emory Estates: Emory Road, Ridgewood & Durand
The 1998 historic district between North Decatur Road, Durand Drive and Peavine Creek was platted on lots about 60 by 200 feet, so the houses stand closer to the street than the Olmsted blocks and the carry is shorter. The constraint moves to the driveway, which was drawn for a car and not a truck, and to the calendar — households tied to the university and the hospital turn over on the academic year.
The Clifton Road corridor: Emory Point, the hospital and the CDC
Clifton Road carries Emory University Hospital at 1364, the Emory Clinic at 1365, the CDC at 1600 and the 443 apartments of Emory Point at 855 Emory Point Drive, opened in 2012 across from the CDC — by its own transportation association the region's largest activity center. A move here is a building move: freight elevator reserved, certificate of insurance filed, the dock window kept. Dorm and residence-hall moves inside the campus are booked as student moves on the college movers page.
The Emory Village and North Decatur Road edge
Where Oxford Road meets North Decatur Road at the roundabout, the district turns to apartments and condos — The Clifton at 1717 North Decatur Road among them — and to the 30329 blocks north of the hospital. Elevators are shared with residents unless the building holds one, and the truck takes the roundabout slowly. North Decatur Road east of the county line and the 30033 side belong to the Decatur page.
Lot, stairs, window
Dispatch turns it into a written plan
How far the truck stops from the door, how many turns the stair makes and whether the building holds its elevator — that is enough for a quote.
The lot and the window
The Druid Hills Lot & Window Sheet
Two things set the hours here: the distance and the height inside the property, and the window a Clifton Road building gives the crew. Both are settled before the date, and the crew carries the sheet with the quote.
Part 1 — What the lot does to the move
| Element | On the Olmsted streets | What it changes | Crew response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set-back and carry | Houses placed deep on curving lots, with drives drawn for a 1920s car | A carry measured in the hundreds of feet, not in steps | Carry measured from the curb photo; dollies and a second team on long carries; the truck stays at the street |
| Tree canopy | DeKalb requires a permit for any tree over 8 inches in diameter; the Atlanta Landmark District requires a certificate to remove a tree of 4-inch caliper or more | Nothing is trimmed or tied back to bring the truck closer | The truck stops short of the canopy and the crew walks the difference |
| Original staircase | 1905–1936 stairs with a landing or a winder turn | King headboards, sleeper sofas and armoires do not clear the turn whole | Measured on the walkthrough; taken apart at the top or left down by agreement; banister padded before the first piece moves |
| Porch and steps | Front porches several steps above the walk, with no ramp of their own | Anything over 250 lb on a dolly has to be ramped, not lifted | Ramp set on the porch before loading; refrigerators and safes go with two movers on the ramp |
| Preservation rules | Exterior alterations in the DeKalb Historic District and the Atlanta Landmark District need a certificate of appropriateness | Nothing on the house is removed or altered to fit a piece through | Doors come off their hinges and go back on; that is the limit of what the crew touches |
Part 2 — What the window does to the move
| Address | What it is | What sets the window | Crew response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emory Point, 855 Emory Point Drive | 443 apartments opened in 2012, across Clifton Road from the CDC | The management office's freight reservation and its certificate of insurance | Window booked with the building before the date; certificate naming the building filed ahead of it |
| Emory University Hospital, 1364 Clifton Road | More than 700 beds, with the Lowergate East and West decks | Deck and shift traffic on Clifton Road | The truck never stages in a hospital deck; Clifton addresses start before the morning clinic traffic |
| Emory Clinic, 1365 Clifton Road, Building A | The outpatient clinic that tells its own patients to allow extra time for parking | The same curb and the same decks | A Clifton Road address is quoted with a Clifton start time, not a citywide one |
| Emory residence halls | Fall move-in Saturday, August 22, 2026 for first-year and transfer students and Sunday, August 23 for returning students, with hall-specific car placards; spring move-out May 7 and May 11, 2027 | The whole corridor runs on the campus clock those days | Household moves on those dates start at 7 a.m. or take another date; the halls themselves are a college-movers job |
| The Clifton, 1717 North Decatur Road | Apartments at the Emory Village end of North Decatur Road | A shared elevator unless a car is reserved | Dispatch asks for the reservation at booking; without one the estimate carries the wait |
Dated, not guessed
The Clifton corridor calendar, in dispatch terms
The corridor's transportation association counts more than 33,000 employees, 15,000 students and two million patient visits a year on roads with no direct interstate or MARTA access, and Emory runs 55 Cliff shuttle buses through it. MARTA's Clifton Corridor bus rapid transit line was still in preliminary design in February 2026, with a Lindbergh Center terminus recommended, so there is no construction detour to plan around yet. The calendar is the constraint, and these are the dates dispatch quotes against.
The card, then the brackets
Druid Hills prices, and the three things that set the hours
The truck, the movers, the pads and dollies and the shrink wrap ride on one hourly rate, and the run out from the office is never on it. In Druid Hills the hours are set by three things the property decides before the inventory does: how far the truck ends up from the door, how many turns the stair makes, and whether a Clifton Road building holds its freight elevator for you. None of them changes the rate. All of them change the estimate.

What sets the hours in Druid Hills
The carry: a set-back house on a wooded lot can put the truck 150 feet from the porch. Two movers on dollies cover that in about 40 extra minutes each way; on a three-bedroom the crew goes to four so the carry runs in parallel instead of in series. The stair: an original staircase with a landing and a winder means the king headboard, the sleeper sofa and the armoire come apart at the top or stay down by agreement — 30 to 45 minutes of disassembly, planned on the walkthrough, not discovered on the landing. The elevator: a reserved freight elevator at a Clifton Road building saves an hour against sharing a passenger car; an unreserved one costs it. Two examples from the brackets: a three-bedroom on a deep lot with a winder stair and a 150-foot carry, four movers, seven to nine hours, $1,680–$2,160; a one-bedroom Clifton-corridor apartment with the elevator held, two movers, three hours, about $480. Weekdays carry a 2.5-hour minimum; weekends, same-day bookings and moves 25 or more miles from downtown carry three. A 25% reservation deposit holds the date and is credited toward the final bill.
What a Druid Hills address books
The jobs that come off Ponce, Clifton and Briarcliff
Whole-house moves from the historic streets
Two-story houses with a third-floor attic room, a basement that opens under the porch and built-ins that stay with the house. Four movers, the disassembly done at origin, floor runners down on the hardwoods before the first piece moves. A move that leaves Georgia is priced separately as a long-distance job.
Apartment and condo moves on the Clifton side
Elevator buildings, garden walk-ups and the mid-rises near Emory Point. Dispatch takes the building name at booking so the freight reservation, the certificate of insurance and the dock window are handled before the date, the way the apartment crews run every managed building in the city.
Downsizing out of a large house
The move from a five-bedroom on Oakdale to a two-bedroom near the hospital, with a sorted inventory and pieces going to three addresses. The senior moving crews work it in stages and label by destination room. When the closings do not line up, one of those three addresses is storage — the pieces you have not decided on wait there instead of crowding the two-bedroom.
Packing a house with a lot of glass and paper
Framed art, a library, china from a dining room that seats twelve. The packing crews come the day before at their own hourly rate, from $140 for two, so move day is only lifting.
On file before the date
Licensed, insured, and papered before the truck is assigned
A Clifton-corridor management office wants a certificate of insurance naming the building before it releases the freight elevator. A historic-district homeowner wants to know who is responsible for the 1920s plaster. Both get the same three documents, and dispatch sends them before the truck is assigned.
Three exchanges, none on the clock
Booking a Druid Hills date: what dispatch asks first
Send the address and the door
Street, floor, the building name on the Clifton side, and a photo from the curb to the front door. That one photo tells dispatch the carry, the porch steps and the tree line at once.
Read the written quote
How many movers, at which rate, for how many estimated hours; where the truck will sit; whether the elevator is reserved; and any Emory calendar date that moves the start time — in writing before a 25% deposit holds the date.
Move day, in the order the house dictates
Runners and door-jamb pads go down first on a historic street; at an elevator building the crew walks the dock and the freight car before the truck opens. The drive out from the office and back is not billed.
Weekday dates on the Olmsted streets usually open within two weeks. The two weekends around Emory's August 22–23 move-in and the week of the Home & Garden Tour fill first, and a Clifton Road building's own freight calendar can decide the date before LIOO's does. A studio can sometimes go the same day; see the same-day page for what decides it.
Answered by dispatch
Druid Hills moving questions, driveway to county line
The truck can't get up our driveway on Springdale — where does it park, and does the long carry cost extra?
It parks at the street, on the address side, and the carry goes into the estimated hours rather than onto a fee. Dispatch measures the distance from the curb to the front door on the photo you send and sizes the crew to it — on a long carry a second team keeps pieces moving so the truck is never waiting on the porch. The rate does not change with the distance; the hours do, and you see them before the date is held.
Can you trim or tie back the tree limbs so the truck gets closer to the house?
No. DeKalb County requires a permit for any tree over 8 inches in diameter, and inside the Atlanta Landmark District a certificate is required to remove a tree of 4-inch caliper or more, so nothing on a Druid Hills lot gets cut or roped back for a truck. The truck stops short of the canopy and the crew covers the difference on dollies, which is why the carry is measured first.
My building near Emory won't hold the freight elevator until it has a certificate of insurance — do you send one?
Yes, before the reservation is made. Give dispatch the building's name and the management office's requirements when you book and a certificate naming the building goes to the office ahead of the date, with the freight window requested at the same time. If the office needs a specific wording or coverage line on the certificate, send its form and it comes back matched.
We're moving during Emory's move-in weekend in August — is that a problem?
Only on Clifton Road and the streets that feed the residence halls. Emory's first-year move-in is Saturday, August 22, 2026 and returning students follow on Sunday, August 23, with placards routing family cars to specific halls. A household move on those blocks starts at 7 a.m., before the placard traffic, or moves to the Friday before; an Olmsted-street address a mile away is unaffected. Dispatch checks your street against the calendar when you book.
Does the Home & Garden Tour weekend change anything for a move on Lullwater or Emory Road?
It changes the curb. The 2026 tour ran April 17–19 with nine houses open and up to 1,500 visitors on the tour streets, and the truck needs its frontage before the first ticket holders arrive. When a date lands on tour weekend, the plan names the curb, sets an early start and keeps the truck off the tour route's turn-ins. Streets outside the tour route run on a normal weekend plan.
Our stairs turn at a landing and the last crew scraped the banister — how do a king bed and a sleeper sofa get upstairs?
By measuring the turn before move day. Original 1905–1936 stairs with a landing or a winder are checked on the walkthrough against the headboard, the sofa and the armoire; what will not clear the turn whole comes apart at the top and goes back together in the room, or stays downstairs by agreement written into the quote. The banister and the newel are padded before the first piece moves, and nothing is forced past the woodwork.
If I'm moving from Emory Point to a house off Oakdale, is that one job or two?
One hourly job with two windows. The Emory Point end is a building move — the freight reservation and the certificate come first — and the Oakdale end is a lot move, where the carry and the stair set the hours. The miles between the two addresses are on the clock; the run from the office to Emory Point and home from Oakdale never are. The estimate lists both ends separately so the total is not a surprise.
Which parts of Druid Hills are in the City of Atlanta and which are DeKalb County, and does it change the move?
Two of the civic association's nine districts sit inside the city; the rest, including most of the historic streets, are unincorporated DeKalb County, and the Emory, CDC and Children's Healthcare campuses were annexed into Atlanta in 2018 while staying in DeKalb. The rate is the same on both sides. What changes is the permit: if a truck must block a travel lane inside the city, that is an Atlanta Department of Transportation right-of-way permit, and dispatch confirms the county's requirement before a date on the unincorporated side.
