Moving to Brookhaven, GA: A Relocation Guide
Brookhaven has been a city only since December 2012, and its line still surprises people: it shares ZIP codes with Atlanta, Chamblee and North Druid Hills, and most of the estate neighborhood called Historic Brookhaven is in the City of Atlanta, with part of it in the City of Brookhaven. This guide covers the boundary, the housing, the MARTA station and the DeKalb school year.

Quick answer
Brookhaven became a city on 17 December 2012, after voters approved it on 31 July 2012. It covers about 12.2 square miles of DeKalb County with about 57,900 residents, and nearly half its homes, 46.8 percent, are in buildings of five or more units. ZIP 30319 is mostly Brookhaven but partly Atlanta, and most of the Historic Brookhaven neighborhood is in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, while part of it, along East Brookhaven Drive, is in the City of Brookhaven and DeKalb County, so check the parcel.
Key Takeaways
- ZIP 30319 is 85.3 percent Brookhaven, but ZIPs 30329, 30341 and 30324 are mostly outside the city.
- DeKalb County, not the city, collects Brookhaven’s trash and runs its water and sewer, and new trash carts take 5 to 10 business days.
- DeKalb’s calendar marks 23–24 November and 5–6 April, inside its breaks, as inclement weather days, so ask the district before you plan a move around them.
A city since 2012, and where its line runs

Land shares from Census ZIP code tabulation areas and the current city boundary, which includes land annexed since 2020. The street address, not the ZIP, decides which government collects the property tax.
Historic Brookhaven is mostly on the Atlanta side
Most of the estate neighborhood known as Historic Brookhaven, around the Capital City Club golf course, is in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, and part of it, along East Brookhaven Drive, is in the City of Brookhaven and DeKalb County, so check the parcel. A move on the Atlanta side is planned as an Atlanta move; the Buckhead movers page covers that part of town.
Housing: more buildings than houses
About 40 percent of Brookhaven’s 27,504 homes were built in the 2000s and 2010s, and only 39 percent are detached houses. A managed building usually wants a reserved elevator or loading time and a certificate of insurance from the mover; LIOO issues that certificate the same day it receives the building’s requirements. Rent at the median runs $1,882 a month.
MARTA, Peachtree Road and I-85
MARTA’s Gold Line stops at Brookhaven/Oglethorpe station, near Oglethorpe University, where the surface lots hold 1,250 spaces and MARTA’s parking page lists free daily parking up to 14 hours. Peachtree Road runs about 2.6 miles through the city beside the rail line, Buford Highway about 3.0 miles, and I-85 crosses the south end for about 2.8 miles. In a straight line Brookhaven sits about 5 to 12.3 miles from Five Points.
DeKalb County schools in 2026–27
Brookhaven’s public schools belong to the DeKalb County School District. Its board-approved 2026–27 calendar is out for Thanksgiving week, 23–27 November, for winter break from 21 to 31 December with classes back on 5 January, for Presidents’ Day plus the February break on 15–19 February and for spring break on 5–9 April, and the year ends on 27 May 2027. Two days in each of the Thanksgiving and spring breaks, 23–24 November and 5–6 April, are marked on the calendar as inclement weather days. The legend does not say what that means for families, so check with the district before choosing those dates.
Planning the move
Hourly rates and how a move inside the city is planned sit on the Brookhaven movers page, and a condo or apartment move is covered on the apartment and condo moves page. Deciding between close-in DeKalb cities? Read Decatur vs. Brookhaven, or the wider moving to Atlanta guide.
The two state errands after the move are covered by the Georgia driver’s license guide and the address-change checklist.
Does Brookhaven collect its own trash?
No. DeKalb County provides sanitation in Brookhaven, and new residents must set up service with proof of ownership or a lease and a prorated fee; carts arrive in 5 to 10 business days. The basic annual assessment for a single-family home is $362.30. DeKalb County Watershed handles new water accounts.
