County Guide · Cobb County
Cobb County has exactly seven incorporated cities — and some of its best-known places aren’t cities at all. Here’s the official list, what changed in 2023, and why the incorporated-or-not distinction actually matters when you move here.
Quick answer
Cobb County, Georgia has 7 incorporated cities: Marietta (the county seat), Smyrna, Mableton, Kennesaw, Acworth, Powder Springs, and Austell. Mableton — incorporated in 2023 — is now the county’s largest city. Well-known areas like East Cobb, Vinings, Fair Oaks, and Cumberland are unincorporated Cobb County, not cities.
| City | What to know | Moving there? |
|---|---|---|
| Marietta | County seat; the only part of Cobb with its own school system (Marietta City Schools) | Marietta movers |
| Mableton | Incorporated in 2023 — Cobb’s newest and largest city | Mableton movers |
| Smyrna | Densest inside-the-Perimeter-adjacent city; heavy apartment and townhome stock | Smyrna movers |
| Kennesaw | Home of Kennesaw State University; northwest Cobb | Kennesaw movers |
| Acworth | Lakeside city on Lake Acworth/Allatoona, far northwest corner | Acworth movers |
| Powder Springs | West Cobb; one of the county’s oldest municipalities | Powder Springs movers |
| Austell | Southwest Cobb, along the Sweetwater Creek corridor | Austell movers |
Official municipal roster per Cobb County government; county data: population 787,538, median household income $102,356, median home value $454,400 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 1-year estimates, retrieved July 2026).
East Cobb, Vinings, Fair Oaks, and the Cumberland area are unincorporated Cobb County. They have strong identities, their own ZIP codes, and in some cases higher home prices than the actual cities — but no city government. Your mailing address can say “Marietta” while you live miles outside Marietta’s city limits in unincorporated East Cobb, or say “Atlanta” while you’re actually in Vinings.
Why it matters when you move
Incorporation decides who polices your street, what you pay in city taxes, and which school system you’re zoned for: Cobb County School District covers everywhere in the county except the city of Marietta, which runs Marietta City Schools. Check the county’s address lookup before you commit to a lease or contract — the mailing address alone won’t tell you.
Cobb runs above both the Georgia and U.S. medians: household income of $102,356 and a median home value of $454,400 (ACS 2024 1-year). Moving costs inside the county work like anywhere in metro Atlanta — hourly crews, priced by size and access. The full breakdown lives in our Atlanta moving cost guide; for a deeper read on Cobb’s county seat, start with moving to Marietta.

Seven: Marietta, Smyrna, Mableton, Kennesaw, Acworth, Powder Springs, and Austell. Lists claiming more are usually counting unincorporated communities like East Cobb or Vinings.
No. East Cobb is unincorporated Cobb County — it has no city government, and most of it carries a Marietta mailing address despite being outside Marietta’s city limits.
Mableton, which incorporated in 2023 and became the county’s largest city by population. Marietta remains the county seat.
