Moving Box Guide: Sizes, What Goes in Each, and How Many

The one rule that prevents most box failures: the heavier the item, the smaller the box

Most box failures are size mismatches: heavy things in big boxes (bottoms blow out, backs get hurt) and light things in small boxes (wasted trips). Match the box to the density and the whole move gets faster.

Key Takeaways

  • Box sizes vary by seller: extra-large is 24 by 18 by 24 inches at U-Haul and 24 by 24 by 24 on Public Storage’s chart.

  • A book box is smaller than a small box: 12 by 12 by 12 inches, or 1 cubic foot.

  • The weight limit stamped on a box is the most it is designed to hold, not a load to fill it to.

  • Keep any packed box under about 50 pounds, whatever its stamp says.

The four standard sizes And what belongs in each

Moving boxes come in four standard sizes, and the rule for choosing is simple: the heavier the contents, the smaller the box. The dimensions below follow U-Haul’s box guide, with small and medium rounded down to the whole inch.

  • Small — 1.5 cu ft (16″×12″×12″): books, records, dishes, pantry, tools, files. If it’s dense, it goes here. This should be a third or more of your total count. Atlas Van Lines packs books on edge in 1.5 cu ft boxes and keeps the box under 50 pounds.

  • Medium — 3.0 cu ft (18″×18″×16″): the general-purpose box — pots and pans, toys, shoes, decor, small appliances.

  • Large — 4.5 cu ft (18″×18″×24″): bedding, towels, pillows, lampshades. If you can’t lift it comfortably, it’s overpacked.

  • Extra-large — 6.0 cu ft (24″×18″×24″): comforters and stuffed animals. Almost nothing else — a full XL of anything dense is unliftable.

Specialty boxes Worth every dollar

Specialty moving boxes each do one job that a standard box does badly.

  • Book box: 12″×12″×12″, 1.0 cu ft. U-Haul rates its book box to hold up to 65 pounds, more than you should lift, so stop well short of that.

  • Dish pack (double-walled): the kitchen box — see packing dishes & glasses.

  • Wardrobe box: closet rod inside; clothes move on hangers. One per ~2 feet of rod, the same rule U-Haul gives for its large wardrobe box, which measures 24″×24″×48″ and has a 24-inch hanging bar.

  • Picture/mirror box: telescoping, for framed art — method in packing artwork & mirrors.

  • TV box: an adjustable carton with foam corners — see packing a TV.

How many you need By bedrooms

The mix of box sizes matters as much as the total. The rough mixes below split each home’s boxes by size; the supplies checklist compares published totals with what LIOO’s materials packages hold.

  • Studio / 1-bedroom: 20–40 boxes (roughly 15 small, 15 medium, 8 large).

  • 2-bedroom: 40–60 (20/20/12 plus specialty).

  • 3-bedroom: 60–90 (30/30/18 plus specialty).

  • 4-bedroom+: 90–120 — and consider whether professional packing beats two weekends of DIY at that scale.

How do you tell how strong a moving box is?

A moving box’s strength is usually stamped on it. The Box Maker’s Certificate, found on the bottom of most corrugated boxes, states whether the box is single, double or triple wall, plus its strength rating, size limit and gross weight limit (UPS packaging consultant Chad Thompson in PARCEL). Burst strength suits heavy, dense items because it measures resistance to tearing. Edge crush (ECT) measures top-to-bottom compressive strength, which matters in a stack. For scale, U-Haul rates its book box ECT 32 and its double-walled Dish Barrel ECT 51. The gross weight limit does not mean a box will survive being loaded to it.

Packed-right test

A moving box is packed right when it has a flat lid, no bulge, no sound on a gentle shake and a label on two sides with room and contents, and when it weighs under about 50 pounds. That ceiling sits just below the 51-pound starting load in NIOSH’s voluntary lifting equation, which is lowered for real-world lifts (OSHA). Boxes that pass stack cleanly in the truck — which is most of what makes a load fast. Full supply quantities (paper, tape, wrap) are in the packing supplies checklist.

Common questions

What size box for books?

Small (1.5 cu ft). Books are the classic overpacking mistake — a large box of books can top 100 pounds and the bottom fails.

How many boxes for a 2-bedroom apartment?

Typically 40–60: about 20 small, 20 medium, 12 large, plus a dish pack and a few wardrobe boxes.

How heavy should a moving box be?

Under about 50 pounds, and under 40 for dishes. If you cannot lift it comfortably, split it into two boxes.
